Industry News - Escalating U.S. Corporate Legal Fees

Corporate Legal Bills Soar

"Corporate legal bills soared nearly 20% this year and could increase by a further 9% in 2007 according to a survey of leading companies in the U.S. Firms are increasingly turning to outside legal specialists for their most important work, such as mergers, regulatory problems and class action litigation. Outside lawyers now account for 65% of corporate legal spending by large firms, compared with 42% in 2001."

GC's Vent their Frustrations

"Fed up GCs, squeezed by budget constraints and pressure from boards of directors, are reacting to shoddy work by outside counsel by demoting and replacing their primary law firms and spreading the wealth among a larger network of secondary firms. Nothing is more dangerous than a client who's left to assume a lawyer is playing golf or, worse, napping on their dime. So it's always a good idea to regularly gauge client satisfaction."

Corporate Legal Department Total Spending

"Total corporate legal department spending at major US corporations increased 7% annually from 2003-2006. Total department spending includes internal costs and outside counsel costs."
